Now,over50yearssincehedied,anewstudybyFalkofFloridaStateUniversity,US,hasuncoveredmoreaboutthephysicist’sbrain,thankstosomenewlypresentedphotos.

WhenEinsteindiedin1955attheageof76,ascientistnamedThomasHarveyremovedEinstein’sbrainandpreservedit.Harveysliced(切片)thebrainintohundredsofpiecesandtook14photosfromseveralangles.Harveyshowedthesebrainslicestothepublic,butkeptthephotosprivate.

ThedisplayedbrainslicesallowedscientistsaglanceintothesourceofEinstein’sgenius,butthefindingswereverylimited.In1999,forexample,researchersatMcMasterUniversity,US,comparedEinstein’sbrainwiththoseofabout90normalpeopleandfoundthat“oneareaofhisbrainwassignificantlydifferentfrommostpeople’s”.

ThreeyearsafterHarveydied,hisfamilyfinallydonatedthe14photostotheNationalMuseumofHealthandMedicineinWashingtonDCinxxxx.Falkandherteambegananalyzingthephotosinxxxxandhavemadeoutseveralpreviouslyunrecognizedunusualthings.

Inthenewstudy,publishedNov16inthemagazineBrain,FalkfoundthatthesizeandshapeofEinstein’sbrainarebothnormal,butthebrilliantphysicisthadextrafoldinginhisbrain’sgraymatter,whichisresponsibleforconsciousthinking.Scientistsbelievethatmorefoldingcreatesmoreconnectionsbetweendistantbraincells,allowingonetomakementalleaps(跳跃)moreeasily.

Inaddition,apartcalledthefrontallobes(脑前叶),whichplaysakeyroleinabstract(抽象)thought,alsohadunusualfolding.ThismayhavehelpedEinsteindevelopthetheoryofrelativity.

“Hedidthoughtexperimentswherehe’dimaginehimselfridingalongsideabeamoflight,andthisisexactlythepartofthebrainonewouldexpecttobeveryactiveinsuchthoughtexperiments,”FalktoldLiveScience.
