Called

upon

to

undertake

the

duties

of

the

first

executive

office

of

our

country,我应召担任国家的最高行政长官。

I

avail

myself

of

the

presence

of

that

portion

of

my

fellow_citizens

which

is

here

assembled

to

express

my

grateful

thanks

for

the

favor

with

which

they

have

been

pleased

to

look

toward

me,值此诸位同胞集会之时,我衷心感谢大家寄予我的厚爱。

to

declare

a

sincere

conciousness

that

the

task

is

above

my

talents,诚挚地说,我意识到这项任务非我能力所及,

and

that

I

approach

it

with

those

anxious

and

awful

presentiments

which

the

greatness

of

the

charge

and

the

weakness

of

my

powers

so

justly

inspire.

rising

nation,spread

over

a

wide

and

fruitful

land,traversing

all

the

seas

with

the

rich

productions

of

their

power

forget

rapidly

destinies

beyond

see

hopes

beloved

country

committed

to

the

issue,and

the

contemplation,and

humble

myself

before

the

magnitude

the

presence

many

whom

I

see

here

remind

me

that

in

the

other

high

authorities

provided

by

our

Constitution

shall

find

resources

which

rely

under

all

difficulties.

charged

with

the

sovereign

functions

legislation,and

steer

the

contest

of

opinion

through

which

we

have

passed

the

animation

of

worn

an

aspect

which

might

impose

on

strangers

unused

to

think

freely

and

to

write

what

they

now

decided

law,and

unite

in

common

efforts

for

the

common

principle,that

though

the

will

of

the

majority

is

in

all

cases

to

must

be

reasonable;that

the

minority

possess

their

equal

us,then,fellow_citizens,unite

with

one

heart

restore

to

social

intercourse

that

harmony

affection

liberty

even

life

but

dreary

things.

us

reflect

that,having

banished

from

our

land

that

religious

intolerance

mankind

gained

little

are

Federalists.

there

be

any

among

us

who

would

wish

to

dissolve

this

Union

or

to

change

its

republican

them

stand

undisturbed

as

monuments

of

the

safety

with

which

error

of

opinion

may

be

tolerated

where

reason

know,indeed,that

some

honest

men

fear

that

republican

said

man

be

trusted

the

government

of

himself.

Can

be,then,be

trusted

with

the

government

of

others?

Or

have

we

found

angels

in

the

forms

of

kings

to

govern

him?
